"Myth of the Swiss Mountains. Identity and challenge".

The exhibition is divided into three parts:

From the valley to the summit

The first part focuses on painting. In a dialogue between contemporary works and representations from earlier epochs, the paintings lead through several stations from the plain to the mountain peaks. The journey begins in the valley, with the mountains on the horizon, and takes the viewer over the hills of the Emmental, across the pastures of the Alps, through rugged rock, ice and snow to the mountain peaks with their breathtaking panoramas.
Parallel to the altitude levels, stone sculptures give a glimpse of what invisible beneath the surface makes up the mountains.

The mountain in its diversity

The mountain in its diversity

The Niesen is the focus of the third part. Artists from three centuries approach this archetype of mountain in their very own perspective and interpretation. The diversity encourages comparison - not least with one's own ideas of the mountain.
The exhibition "culminates" in the gymnasium, where - as a finale, so to speak - three well-known painters from three centuries enter into a dialogue with the theme of "mountain" by means of large-format paintings.
Accompanying events complement and deepen
The dialogue between visitors and works of art will be deepened by accompanying events. In addition to the eye, the other senses are also addressed. New dimensions open up and perception changes and becomes richer.

Beauty and vulnerability of the mountains

In the second part, the beauty and permanence of the mountains are contrasted with their vulnerability. Photographic works document both aspects without neglecting the aesthetics. Finally, video installations take us from the present to a fictitious future. Exaggerated or realistic? The answer is left to the visitors.
